Saltwater Audio — What Actually Holds Up

Marine audio is the only audio environment that combines UV, salt spray, mechanical vibration, and constant water exposure. A car audio system installed in a wakeboat will fail in 12 months. The good news: true marine-grade gear is built specifically for these conditions, and once you understand what makes it different, you can build something that lasts a decade.

Why marine speakers cost more

Marine speakers aren't just car speakers with a sticker. They use sealed butyl-rubber surrounds (not foam, which UV destroys), UV-stable polypropylene or fiberglass cones, stainless or coated-aluminum frames, and gold or tinned-copper terminals. Quality units have IP-rated baskets — IP65 is splash-resistant, IP66 handles wave wash, IP67 survives temporary submersion. Skip the rating and you're rolling the dice.

Wire — tinned copper or nothing

Salt water + bare copper = corrosion in weeks. Marine-grade wire uses tinned copper strands, which form a passivation layer that resists corrosion. The Wire Gauge calculator picks the right AWG by amperage and length; for boats, always select OFC tinned. Crimp connections need adhesive-lined heat shrink to keep moisture out — the regular dry-shrink type lets water wick in along the strands.

Power planning

  • Wake boats with tower speakers routinely run 2–4 amps and 4–8 coaxials — 1200–2400W RMS total
  • A lithium house bank under the helm (100–200Ah LiFePO4) handles engine-off listening without draining cranking power
  • Marine alternators are typically 70–110A; for systems over 1500W RMS you need a high-output unit or a DC-DC charger from the cranking battery to the audio bank
  • Always fuse close to the battery — within 7" is the ABYC standard

Where boats sound different than cars

Open water has no reflective surfaces. SPL drops 6 dB every time the distance doubles, with no room gain to make up for it. That's why tower speakers exist — they aim sound at the wakeboarder or skier rather than letting it dissipate. For dockside listening, larger high-sensitivity speakers (95+ dB/W/m) beat lots of small ones at half the power.

Maintenance after every salt-water trip

  • Rinse speaker grilles with fresh water — even "salt-resistant" gear needs the salt rinsed off
  • Spray a corrosion preventer (Boeshield T-9 or similar) on all amp heat sinks and exposed metal hardware
  • Open the amp lid and inspect terminals annually — tighten anything loose, re-grease anything dry
  • Check head unit gasket annually; replace if cracked
